Is omega-3 good for an enlarged prostate?

Fish oil is not an established treatment for shrinking an enlarged prostate or reliably relieving its urinary symptoms. Benign prostate enlargement, prostatitis and prostate cancer are different conditions. Evidence about inflammation or cancer associations should not be presented as proof that omega-3 treats benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Identify the cause of urinary symptoms

NIDDK describes several prostate conditions that can cause symptoms. Frequency, weak flow or nighttime urination does not establish which condition is present. Inability to urinate requires immediate medical help rather than a supplement trial. [1]

General omega-3 effects do not prove prostate shrinkage

Omega-3s have biological roles and some specific medical uses, but those do not establish a BPH regimen. A study about a different prostate outcome cannot supply a dose or promise of improved bladder emptying. [2][1]

BPH has established management options

Depending on symptoms, NIDDK describes monitoring, lifestyle adjustments, medicines and procedures. Some prescribed medicines relax relevant muscles; others can reduce prostate growth or size. Fish oil should not be treated as interchangeable with these approaches. [1]

Track the practical problem

Imagine repeated nighttime urination leads someone to buy fish oil. Record symptoms, drinks and medicines and seek assessment. An unrelated heart-health reason for omega-3 use does not mean that the urinary problem has been treated. [1][3]
