The study and its comparison
Five boys with ADHD received theanine, caffeine, both, and placebo in separate randomized sessions. Researchers used cognitive tasks and functional imaging about one to two hours after dosing. [1]
The combination improved some attention and composite measures. Caffeine worsened inhibitory control, while theanine alone showed a trend in that direction; the combination’s inhibition result was only a trend toward improvement. [1]
What the finding establishes
Five participants and acute testing leave substantial uncertainty about reproducibility, daily functioning and repeated-use safety. Brain imaging does not remove those limitations. Texas Tech institutional programs funded the work, and the authors declared no competing interests. These study exposures are not pediatric dosing advice. [1]
A hypothetical distinction
Imagine two tests move in different directions after the same intervention. Calling the result simply better focus would hide a relevant tradeoff.
