The study and its comparison
Fourteen participants took theanine, caffeine and placebo during separate sessions involving mental and physical stress. Researchers examined blood-pressure responses and mood. [1]
The favorable pressure finding concerned participants whose placebo-session response exceeded the group average. Theanine also reduced a tension-anxiety score relative to placebo after the mental task. [1]
What the finding establishes
Subgroup selection and the small sample make replication important. A temporary laboratory response does not establish lower usual blood pressure, fewer cardiovascular events or a replacement for prescribed treatment. Japanese public research programs supported the study, and the authors declared no competing interests. The experiment does not justify a universal pressure-lowering dose. [1]
A hypothetical distinction
Imagine pressure rises less during one stressful task. That observation does not describe average pressure throughout an ordinary week.
