One fruit is not the same as the whole diet
ODS lists 70 mg vitamin C for a medium orange. Its adult recommended allowances are 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men, with different values during pregnancy and breastfeeding. People who smoke require an additional 35 mg daily. [1]
The food-table amount is representative. Fruit size and composition vary, so the number is an estimate rather than a guarantee for an individual orange. [1]
A small difference need not require a supplement
Comparing 70 mg with a daily reference does not mean the remainder must come from a capsule. Other fruits and vegetables contribute vitamin C during the day. A person’s intake should be assessed across foods rather than judging adequacy from one item alone. [1]
Do not confuse the 90 mg label Daily Value with every individual’s recommended allowance. Both are useful references but serve different purposes. [1]
Add contributions using the same units
Imagine a day includes the representative orange and 49 mg from half a cup of sliced strawberries. Together they supply about 119 mg. That is an intake estimate, not evidence that eating both treats a medical condition.
