Evidence and findings

One hundred fifty women with cyclic mastalgia were randomized to vitamin E or placebo for four months. Pain severity and duration were assessed with breast-pain charts and visual scales. [1]

The report described an advantage over placebo at two and four months, without a significant additional difference between those treatment durations. The measured question concerned cyclical pain. [1]

Interpretation and limits

Cyst disappearance, diagnosis of a new breast lump and long-term breast outcomes were not established by the reported endpoints. Funding and conflicts were not established from the abstract. Symptom improvement in a trial should not substitute for assessment of a new or changing breast finding. [1]

A hypothetical distinction

Imagine discomfort decreases while no imaging outcome was collected. The symptom result cannot show that an underlying structural finding disappeared.
