A dark mark is not necessarily a scar
AAD describes hyperpigmentation after acne, inflammation, injury or irritating products. Depressed or raised scars involve a different structural change. A before-and-after image cannot establish that one oil treats every category, especially when marks can fade over time. [1][2]
The vitamin E evidence does not support a universal remedy
AAD describes limited research for nonprescription vitamin E scar treatments. A systematic review found insufficient evidence for routine vitamin E alone to improve scar appearance. Neither finding establishes a skin-whitening recipe or a dose of capsule contents for acne marks. [2][3]
Irritation can undermine the goal
Some vitamin E studies reported dermatitis or rash. AAD warns that skin-care irritation can itself cause dark spots, particularly in darker skin tones. Do not keep using a burning or itchy product on the assumption that the reaction means pigment is being removed. [3][1]
Treat the cause and protect against further darkening
Control ongoing acne or another inflammatory condition and use appropriate sun protection. AAD discusses specific options such as vitamin C, azelaic acid and retinoids for selected pigmentation concerns; suitability depends on the person and diagnosis. Those options are not interchangeable with liquid vitamin E. [1]
Ask which change needs treatment
Imagine a healed pimple leaves a flat brown mark beside an indented scar. They may require different approaches. A dermatologist can assess persistent or changing lesions and help choose treatment rather than relying on an all-purpose capsule mask. [1][2]
| Finding | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Flat darker patch | Pigmentation cause and triggers |
| Indented or raised area | Structural scar type |
| Burning after an oil | Possible irritation requiring cessation |
