The study and its comparison

Twenty-four men with mild erectile dysfunction completed a single-blind study. They received placebo for one month followed by citrulline for another month, with erection-hardness and sexual-activity measures recorded. [1]

Twelve men reached the study’s normal-hardness category during citrulline treatment, compared with two during placebo. No adverse events were reported in this small cohort. [1]

What the finding establishes

The fixed sequence leaves time and order effects unresolved; it was not a randomized parallel comparison. Twenty-four participants cannot establish comprehensive safety or equivalence to established therapies. Funding and conflicts were not established from the abstract. Citrulline is a different compound from creatine, so this pilot supplies no evidence that creatine treats erectile dysfunction. [1]

A hypothetical distinction

Imagine everyone receives active treatment second. Improvement may reflect treatment, time, expectations or a combination that the design cannot fully separate.
