Marine collagen in diabetes: an older trial reported metabolic changes

A three-month study reported improved glucose and lipid measurements. It does not establish that every collagen product treats diabetes.

The study and its comparison

One hundred Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes were randomized to treatment or patient-control groups; 50 healthy people formed a separate reference group. The treatment group received an additional 13 grams daily of fish-derived collagen peptides. [1]

Several glucose and lipid measures favored treatment, including glycated hemoglobin and fasting glucose. Inflammatory and vascular markers were also assessed. [1]

What the finding establishes

The abstract gives limited detail about blinding, the control intervention and background treatment. The healthy reference group was not the randomized comparison. Funding and conflicts were not established. The findings concern the tested preparation and short-term measurements, not prevention of diabetic complications or a reason to change medication independently. [1]

A hypothetical distinction

Imagine a paper includes healthy controls as well as randomized patients. Only the appropriate patient comparison answers the intervention question.
