The study and its comparison
The randomized research included 79 participants. Its population was adults with type 2 diabetes managed with diet or metformin. The comparison used seventeen grams whey plus five grams guar or flavored placebo before two daily meals, with observation over twelve weeks. [1]
The mixture lowered post-meal glucose and slowed gastric emptying. HbA1c was about 0.1 percentage point lower than with placebo at twelve weeks. Weight, lean mass, fat mass and energy intake did not differ. [1]
What the finding establishes
The study was single-blind and combined protein with fiber, so it cannot isolate whey or establish that any protein shake has the same effect. Participants already had relatively well-controlled diabetes. A statistically significant but small HbA1c difference should not be described as normalization or medication replacement. Funding and complete conflicts were not established from the retrieved abstract. [1]
A hypothetical distinction
Imagine HbA1c differs by 0.1 percentage point while weight is unchanged. Glucose and weight claims need separate evidence.
