What is a probiotic drink, and how do you choose one?

A drink may contain added live microorganisms, but a probiotic benefit requires evidence for the organisms and amount supplied. The beverage category, fermented taste and a large front-label number do not establish that it improves every gut symptom.

How probiotics are made: strain selection, fermentation and preservation

Making a probiotic product involves growing identified microorganisms, preparing them for a stable formulation and preserving enough viable organisms through storage. Freeze-drying can leave microbes dormant but alive. A manufacturing process alone does not prove a clinical benefit.

Do probiotics interact with medications?

Medication review matters when considering a probiotic, although the issues differ from ordinary drug-drug interactions. Antibiotics can inactivate susceptible bacteria, immune-suppressing treatment can change infection risk, and extra ingredients can have their own interactions. There is no single spacing rule that makes every probiotic safe with every medicine.

What are probiotics with prebiotics and cranberry used for?

These combinations are usually marketed for digestive or urinary wellness, but the ingredients have different roles and evidence. A prebiotic-plus-probiotic blend does not automatically make cranberry more effective, and the combination is not an established treatment for a UTI or vaginal infection.

A probiotic is not a vitamin

Vitamins are nutrients; probiotics are live microorganisms with demonstrated benefits when given in adequate amounts. A combined supplement can contain both.
