Melanin and melatonin: similar names, different substances
Melanin is a pigment, while melatonin is a hormone involved in biological timing. Their similar names do not mean they have the same functions or can replace one another.
Melatonin and sleep supplements: evidence, timing and safety
Compare melatonin with non-melatonin sleep supplements by sleep problem, evidence, release form, next-day effects and safety.
Melatonin across age: a changing rhythm is not an automatic deficiency
Melatonin patterns change during development and aging. A population-level decline in rhythm amplitude does not establish that every older adult needs hormone replacement.
Can you be allergic to melatonin? Serious reactions need immediate care
Allergic reactions to melatonin products are possible. Sudden swelling, breathing difficulty or collapse is an emergency, not ordinary bedtime drowsiness.
Melatonin and diphenhydramine are different types of sleep aid
Melatonin is a hormone-related medicine or supplement depending on the setting. Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. Their ability to affect sleep does not make them interchangeable.
Is melatonin an antioxidant? Mechanisms and clinical limits
Melatonin has antioxidant actions in experimental research, including direct reactions with reactive species and effects on cellular antioxidant systems. These mechanisms do not make it a proven general anti-aging or disease-prevention supplement. A biochemical antioxidant effect and a meaningful health benefit require different evidence.
Can you take melatonin with atrial fibrillation?
Atrial fibrillation calls for an individual medicine review before adding melatonin. The diagnosis alone does not establish a universally safe dose, and melatonin should not replace rhythm, rate-control or stroke-prevention treatment. Pay particular attention to anticoagulants and blood-pressure medicines in the complete regimen.
When to take melatonin before bed depends on the formulation and purpose
There is no single lead time for every melatonin product or sleep problem. Standard and slow-release preparations have different instructions, and treatment of a shifted body clock is not the same question as short-term insomnia.
Can you take melatonin before a sleep study?
Ask the sleep laboratory or ordering clinician before taking melatonin for the test. Preparation depends on the type of study and what it is trying to measure. Disclose regular use, dose and timing; do not add a new sleep aid or abruptly change prescribed medicines to make the test easier without instructions.
Does melatonin cross the blood-brain barrier?
Yes, melatonin can cross the blood-brain barrier. That property helps explain why it is studied for brain-related effects, but it does not establish that a supplement prevents dementia, repairs the barrier or treats a neurological disease. Brain access and proven clinical benefit are separate questions.
Melatonin and weight: fat mass and scale weight are different outcomes
A year-long trial in postmenopausal women found a fat-mass difference without a significant body-weight difference. It does not establish melatonin as a weight-loss treatment.
Caffeine can increase exposure to oral melatonin
A small pharmacokinetic experiment found higher melatonin concentrations when caffeine was coadministered. It does not support using the combination to improve sleep.
The chemical structure of melatonin
Melatonin has an indole ring, a methoxy group and an acetamide-containing side chain. Its formula describes the molecule, not a supplement dose.
Melatonin for children: short-term findings and unresolved questions
Some pediatric sleep studies show benefits, but they do not establish a universal child dose or long-term safety. A child’s sleep problem should be assessed before supplementation.
Melatonin and clotting factors: a laboratory endpoint study
The experiment did not measure bleeding events or prove that melatonin is an anticoagulant treatment.
Melatonin and constipation: a reported effect is not a diagnosis
Constipation has been reported with melatonin, but its frequency and relevance depend on the evidence and preparation. New constipation still needs review of other medicines, diet and symptoms.
Daytime melatonin after simulated night shifts: sleep and alertness differed
More sleep on the first day did not translate into better performance during the next night shift.
Does melatonin interfere with deep sleep?
Melatonin is not generally established as a drug that suppresses deep sleep, but its effect is not identical across formulations, timing and people. Falling asleep sooner, feeling sedated and spending more time in deep sleep are different outcomes. A wearable estimate alone cannot determine whether melatonin changed your sleep architecture.
Melatonin in dementia: do not borrow reassurance from other sleep studies
NCCIH cites guidance against melatonin use in dementia and notes that older adults can experience prolonged activity and daytime drowsiness. Other sleep populations are not equivalent.
Is melatonin good for depression?
Melatonin is not a well-established antidepressant treatment. Improving a sleep-timing problem may be useful in an individual care plan, but it is not the same as treating depression. Research has produced mixed results, and a favorable subgroup finding does not justify replacing established care.
MELODY: early sleep gains did not persist through one year
The dialysis trial did not improve its primary vitality outcome, and dropout limits interpretation.
Dizziness after melatonin: stop risky activities and assess the symptom
Dizziness can occur with melatonin. Sit or lie down, avoid driving, and obtain medical advice for persistent, severe or otherwise concerning symptoms.
Melatonin label units: milligrams are not milliliters
Milligrams measure melatonin mass; milliliters measure liquid volume. A liquid’s concentration is needed to connect them, and unit arithmetic does not select an appropriate dose.
Does melatonin cause dry eyes or help them?
Melatonin is not an established treatment for dry eye, and the reviewed guidance does not identify dry eye as a common melatonin side effect. Neither statement rules out an individual reaction. Experimental eye research should not be interpreted as proof that an oral sleep supplement will improve tear production.
